Capacitance and ESR measure different things about the same capacitor. Capacitance tells you how much charge the capacitor can store, while ESR tells you how much internal resistance it has when charging and discharging.
Capacitance
Capacitance is the main rated value printed on the part, usually in microfarads. A capacitor can still read close to its rated capacitance and yet perform poorly if its internal resistance is too high.
ESR
ESR means equivalent series resistance. Low ESR is generally better because it allows the capacitor to charge and discharge efficiently in a circuit, especially in power supplies. A capacitor with high ESR may still show an acceptable capacitance reading but behave badly in real use.
Why both matter
A capacitance reading alone can miss aging or failure in electrolytic capacitors because the stored value may still look normal even when the capacitor can no longer filter power properly. ESR is often the more useful clue in TV repair because high ESR can cause ripple, instability, and startup problems.

Practical takeaway
