How to Replace a Phone Ambient Light Sensor

The ambient light sensor automatically adjusts screen brightness to match surrounding light levels, ensuring comfortable viewing indoors and outdoors while conserving battery life. A failed sensor causes the screen to stay at maximum brightness or fail to adjust, impacting both usability and battery performance.

What You Will Need

  • Replacement ambient light sensor (model-specific)

  • Precision screwdrivers

  • Plastic pry tools and spudger

  • Tweezers

Step 1 — Confirm Auto-Brightness Failure

Enable adaptive brightness in display settings and move the phone between bright and dim environments. If brightness fails to adjust automatically, test by covering the sensor area at the top front of the phone — the display should dim in response. No dimming confirms sensor failure.

Step 2 — Access the Sensor

The ambient light sensor typically sits directly beside the proximity sensor near the top of the display. Open the screen side of the phone, disconnect the battery, and locate the sensor module.

Step 3 — Remove the Old Sensor

Disconnect the sensor's flex cable from the motherboard. Gently release the sensor from its housing — it is usually held in a plastic bracket or by a small adhesive pad on the back of the sensor face.

Step 4 — Install the Replacement

Place the new sensor into the bracket, ensuring its window faces the front glass accurately. Reconnect the flex cable. On some phones the ambient light and proximity sensors are on a shared module — replace the module as a unit in this case.

Step 5 — Test Adaptive Brightness

Reassemble and test by moving between light and dark environments with adaptive brightness enabled. Confirm the screen adjusts smoothly and proportionally before sealing.
