How to Replace a Phone Battery Cover
The battery cover (or back cover) protects internal components, houses the rear camera lenses, and contributes to water resistance on sealed devices. Cracks, chips, or shattered glass rear panels are purely cosmetic but can expose the interior to dust and moisture.
What You Will Need
-
Replacement back cover (model-specific — note colour and finish)
-
Heat gun or hairdryer
-
Plastic pry tools and spudger
-
Adhesive strips or back cover adhesive pre-cut for your model
-
Isopropyl alcohol and lint-free cloth
Step 1 — Purchase the Correct Cover
Rear covers differ between storage variants (due to different antenna placement), colour versions, and regional models. Verify your exact model number — found in Settings → About Phone — before purchasing.
Step 2 — Remove the Old Cover
Apply heat around the rear panel perimeter for 60–90 seconds to soften adhesive. Attach a suction cup to the centre of the rear panel, pull upward slightly, and insert a plastic pry tool into the gap at one of the lower corners. Work around all four edges slowly. On glass-back phones apply more heat and work even more slowly to avoid cracking the old panel.
Step 3 — Clean the Chassis
Remove all old adhesive from the chassis frame using isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth. Allow to dry completely.
Step 4 — Apply New Adhesive and Fit the Cover
Apply pre-cut adhesive strips to the chassis frame. Align the new back cover carefully — camera cutout aligned to the lens array, side button cutouts matched to hardware buttons — and press down evenly from the centre outward.
Step 5 — Cure the Adhesive
Clamp or hold the cover under firm, even pressure for 5–10 minutes. Allow a full 30 minutes before exposing the device to moisture.
