Camera module replacement covers any camera on the device — front, rear wide, telephoto, or macro. As phone camera systems become more complex, a failed module in the array can disable computational photography features even when other cameras remain working.
What You Will Need
- Correct replacement camera module (verify sensor size, aperture, and OIS specification)
- Precision screwdrivers
- Plastic pry tools and spudger
- Tweezers
- Isopropyl alcohol
- Anti-static wrist strap
Step 1 — Diagnose the Faulty Module
Open the stock camera app and systematically test each lens. Third-party apps such as Open Camera allow you to force-select specific camera IDs to isolate the exact failed module before purchasing a replacement.
Step 2 — Open the Device
Power off, open the chassis via the rear panel or screen depending on the module location, and disconnect the battery before proceeding.
Step 3 — Access and Remove the Module
Locate the target module. Remove any retaining bracket screws and carefully lift the flex cable connector from the motherboard socket. Lift the module straight up and out of its housing.
Step 4 — Seat the New Module
Lower the new module into its housing, ensuring the lens aligns correctly with the aperture in the chassis frame. Connect the flex cable firmly. Replace bracket screws — these are critical for OIS-equipped cameras, as loose screws interfere with the stabiliser mechanism.
Step 5 — Calibrate and Test
Power on and test every camera mode: photo, video, slow motion, night mode, and zoom. Some flagship phones require software calibration after camera module replacement — check the manufacturer's documentation or a professional repair technician for post-replacement calibration steps.
