The earpiece is the small speaker at the top of the phone used for call audio. A failing earpiece makes voice calls quiet, muffled, or completely silent even at maximum volume. Replacement is a fiddly but entirely manageable repair.

What You Will Need

  • Replacement earpiece speaker (model-specific)
  • Precision screwdrivers
  • Plastic pry tools and spudger
  • Tweezers
  • Heat gun or hairdryer (if earpiece is under the screen)

Step 1 — Distinguish Earpiece from Loudspeaker

Confirm the earpiece is the fault — the earpiece is only used during standard phone calls, not for media playback. A device with clear media audio but silent calls has a faulty earpiece, not a loudspeaker problem.

Step 2 — Open the Screen Side

The earpiece sits behind the front face of the phone, usually requiring screen removal to access. Heat and open the screen using suction cup and plastic pry tools, then disconnect the battery.

Step 3 — Remove the Earpiece

The earpiece may sit in a slot above the display with spring contacts, or it may be attached to the screen frame via a flex cable. For spring-contact earpieces, simply lift out the old unit and drop in the new one. For flex-connected earpieces, disconnect the cable and unscrew any retaining bracket.

Step 4 — Install the Replacement

Seat the new earpiece into its slot, ensure spring contacts or flex connections are correctly aligned, and secure any retaining screws. Verify alignment with the earpiece grille opening in the phone's top edge.

Step 5 — Test Call Audio

Reassemble, power on, and place a test call. Confirm audio is clear at all volume levels and that the proximity sensor (which sits near the earpiece) still functions by checking that the screen blanks when the phone is raised to the ear.
