How to Replace a Phone Fingerprint Sensor
The fingerprint sensor enables biometric authentication for device unlock, payment authorisation, and app security. Failure — from physical damage, water intrusion, or a faulty flex cable — returns the phone to PIN-only security. Replacement restores biometric convenience.
What You Will Need
-
Replacement fingerprint sensor (model-specific)
-
Precision screwdrivers
-
Plastic pry tools and spudger
-
Tweezers
-
Heat gun (for under-display and rear-mounted sensors)
-
Anti-static wrist strap
Step 1 — Identify Sensor Location and Type
Fingerprint sensors are located in three positions depending on the phone: integrated into the home button (front-facing), mounted on the rear panel, or embedded under the display (optical or ultrasonic under-display sensor). Each location requires a different access approach.
Step 2 — Open the Device
For rear-mounted sensors, open the rear panel. For front home button sensors, open the screen side. For under-display sensors, screen removal is required. Always disconnect the battery after opening.
Step 3 — Remove the Sensor
Disconnect the fingerprint sensor flex cable from the motherboard. Remove any retaining screws or brackets. For rear-mounted sensors, peel away any adhesive holding the sensor to the back cover.
Step 4 — Install the Replacement
Seat the new sensor, route the flex cable carefully, and reconnect it to the motherboard. Replace all screws and brackets. For under-display sensors, ensure the sensor is perfectly flat — any tilt causes recognition failures.
Step 5 — Enroll Fingerprints and Test
Power on and go to Settings → Biometrics to add fingerprints on the new sensor. Test recognition speed and accuracy from multiple finger orientations. Seal the device once sensor function is confirmed reliable.
