How to Replace a Phone Flex Cable
Flex cables are the thin ribbon connectors that carry signals and power between components and the motherboard. They are used for screens, cameras, buttons, charging ports, and sensors. A torn, bent, or corroded flex cable causes the connected component to malfunction or fail entirely.
What You Will Need
-
Correct replacement flex cable (component and model-specific)
-
Precision screwdrivers
-
Plastic pry tools and spudger
-
Tweezers
-
Anti-static wrist strap
Step 1 — Identify the Faulty Flex
Diagnose which component is failing, then trace its flex cable path. Flex cables can develop faults from sharp bends, previous repair attempts, or physical impact. Carefully inspect the cable under bright light for visible tears or kinks before ordering a replacement.
Step 2 — Open the Device
Access the faulty flex cable by opening the appropriate side of the chassis. Disconnect the battery before touching any connectors.
Step 3 — Disconnect and Remove
Lift any retaining brackets over the connector and disconnect the flex cable by pulling the connector straight up — never pry from the side, which damages the socket. Follow the cable to any additional anchor points and release them before attempting to remove the cable entirely.
Step 4 — Install the New Cable
Route the new flex cable along the exact path of the original, avoiding sharp bends which will damage the new cable as quickly as the old one. Connect the cable end to the motherboard socket with a firm, even press until it clicks. Replace all brackets and screws.
Step 5 — Test Before Sealing
Power on and verify the connected component functions normally before closing the device. A correct flex cable installation restores full component functionality immediately.
