The front camera handles selfies, video calls, and facial recognition. A damaged or failed front camera module results in a black viewfinder, blurred images, or Face ID and face unlock failures.
What You Will Need
- Replacement front camera module (model-specific)
- Precision screwdrivers
- Plastic pry tools and spudger
- Tweezers
- Heat gun or hairdryer
- Anti-static wrist strap
Step 1 — Power Off and Open the Screen Side
Most front cameras are accessed by opening the screen assembly. Heat the screen edges, use a suction cup to lift, and pry open with plastic tools. Disconnect the battery immediately after opening.
Step 2 — Locate the Front Camera
The front camera sits near the top of the display panel, held within a small bracket or slot. On notch and punch-hole designs it is accessible without fully removing the screen; on older designs it may be glued to the display frame.
Step 3 — Disconnect and Remove
Disconnect the front camera flex cable from the motherboard. Remove any screws or bracket retaining the module. Gently lift the camera out — take care not to dislodge the proximity or ambient light sensor nearby.
Step 4 — Install the Replacement
Seat the new front camera module into the bracket, route the flex cable alongside the original path, and connect it firmly to the motherboard. Replace any retaining screws.
Step 5 — Test and Seal
Power on the phone and test the front camera — check focus, image quality, and face unlock functionality. Confirm the proximity sensor still functions correctly by testing call behaviour. Seal the chassis once all functions verify correctly.
