The loudspeaker (or bottom firing speaker in stereo configurations) produces all media audio and speakerphone output. Blown speakers produce crackling at moderate volumes or complete silence, and replacement is one of the simpler phone repair tasks.
What You Will Need
- Replacement loudspeaker unit (model-specific)
- Precision Phillips screwdrivers
- Plastic pry tools and spudger
- Tweezers
- Replacement speaker gasket (if not included with speaker)
Step 1 — Open the Rear Panel
Power off the device, heat and pry open the rear cover, and disconnect the battery. Most loudspeaker replacements are performed from the rear of the phone, making this a less invasive repair than screen work.
Step 2 — Unscrew and Lift the Speaker
Locate the loudspeaker housing — a rectangular metal or plastic enclosure near the base. Remove retaining screws, then carefully disconnect the flex cable from the motherboard. Some speakers use spring contact pads rather than a flex cable; simply lift these away.
Step 3 — Check the Grille and Port
Inspect the speaker grille port on the phone's chassis. If blocked with debris, clear it with a dry brush before installing the new speaker — a blocked port causes muffled audio regardless of speaker quality.
Step 4 — Install and Seal
Seat the new speaker firmly in its housing with the gasket properly aligned. Reconnect the flex or ensure spring contacts are correctly positioned. Replace screws with even torque. Close the rear panel and press all edges firmly.
Step 5 — Final Audio Test
Power on and play audio at low, medium, and maximum volume. No rattling or distortion at any level indicates a successful replacement.
