A faulty microphone makes your voice inaudible to callers or causes recordings to pick up only noise. Most phones have two or three microphones — a primary mic at the base, a secondary noise-cancelling mic at the top, and sometimes a third near the rear camera.

What You Will Need

  • Replacement microphone (model-specific, correct mic for the affected position)
  • Precision screwdrivers
  • Plastic pry tools and spudger
  • Tweezers
  • Soldering iron (for soldered microphones)
  • Isopropyl alcohol

Step 1 — Identify the Faulty Microphone

Use a voice recorder app to test the primary mic. For the secondary mic, record video outdoors — noise cancellation failure in video points to the top mic. During calls, the primary base mic is used; during speakerphone, the secondary mic may be active.

Step 2 — Open the Device and Disconnect the Battery

Access the microphone through the rear panel or bottom board depending on your model. Disconnect the battery before proceeding.

Step 3 — Locate and Remove the Microphone

The primary microphone is often part of the charging board at the base of the phone. If so, replace the entire daughterboard. If the microphone is a soldered SMD component on the main board, use a soldering iron and tweezers to carefully remove it.

Step 4 — Install the New Microphone

For a daughterboard replacement, seat the new board, reconnect flex cables, and secure retaining screws. For a soldered replacement, position the new microphone precisely on the pads — correct orientation is critical — and solder each contact point.

Step 5 — Test All Microphones

Make a test call and confirm voice clarity. Record a video to verify the secondary mic is also functioning. Test speakerphone and voice assistants to cover all microphone use cases before sealing the device.
