A failed or distorted loudspeaker makes media playback and speakerphone calls nearly unusable. Phone speakers are small rectangular drivers positioned at the bottom or rear of the device, and they are relatively straightforward to replace.
What You Will Need
- Replacement loudspeaker (model-specific)
- Precision screwdrivers
- Plastic pry tools and spudger
- Tweezers
- Isopropyl alcohol
- Anti-static wrist strap
Step 1 — Confirm the Speaker is Faulty
Test audio at maximum volume — distortion or complete silence at all volume levels points to a failed speaker. Also rule out software issues by testing in safe mode or after a factory reset on a backed-up device.
Step 2 — Open the Device
Power off, disconnect the battery after opening the chassis, and locate the speaker module. Most loudspeakers sit at the base of the phone inside the lower chassis.
Step 3 — Remove the Old Speaker
The speaker is typically held by two to four screws and may also have a rubber gasket or dust seal around it. Unscrew the retaining bracket, disconnect the speaker flex cable or contact pads, and lift the speaker out. Note the orientation of the gasket for reassembly.
Step 4 — Install the New Speaker
Place the replacement speaker into the housing, ensuring the mesh grille aligns with the speaker port in the chassis. Reconnect the flex cable or seat the contact pads firmly, replace the rubber gasket, and secure the retaining screws evenly to avoid warping the seal.
Step 5 — Test Audio
Reconnect the battery, power on, and test speaker output at multiple volume levels across different media types — music, video, ringtone, and speakerphone. Confirm no rattling or distortion before sealing.
