To test a charging flex cable with a multimeter, set the meter to continuity mode or the lowest resistance range, make sure the phone is fully powered off, and test each corresponding pin from one end of the flex to the other. A good line will usually beep or show very low resistance, while an open line shows no beep or a high/OL reading.
Basic steps
-
Power off the device and disconnect the flex cable completely.
-
Set the multimeter to continuity mode, or resistance mode if continuity is not available.
-
Touch the probes together first to confirm the meter beeps and is working.
-
Place one probe on a pin at one end of the flex and the other probe on the matching pin at the opposite end.
-
Repeat for each trace or pin on the cable.
What the reading means
-
Beep / near-zero resistance: continuity is present, so that trace is likely good.
-
No beep / OL / very high resistance: the trace may be broken or disconnected.
-
Inconsistent readings when moving the cable: the flex may have an internal crack or intermittent fault.
Important cautions
-
Do not test a powered device in continuity mode.
-
Inspect the flex for tears, kinks, corrosion, or burnt spots before testing.
-
Use a pinout or board diagram if available so you test the correct matching points.
Practical tip
If only one charging line fails, the cable may still power some functions but not charge properly. In that case, the charging flex can be the fault even if other traces still show continuity.
