Keeping your LG TV's software up to date ensures smooth performance, access to the latest streaming apps, and important security patches. LG smart TVs run on webOS, and updates are handled directly through the on-screen settings menu.

Before You Begin

Make sure your TV is connected to a stable home Wi-Fi network or an Ethernet cable. Software updates are downloaded over the internet, so a weak or interrupted connection can cause the process to fail partway through. It's also a good idea to have your TV plugged directly into a power outlet rather than a power strip, since some updates require the TV to restart automatically.

Step 1: Open the Settings Menu

Press the Home button on your LG remote, then navigate to the gear-shaped Settings icon, usually located in the top-right corner of the home screen.

Step 2: Navigate to General Settings

From the Settings menu, select General, then scroll down to find About This TV (on newer webOS versions) or Software Update (on older models).

Step 3: Check for Updates

Select Check for Updates. The TV will connect to LG's servers and check whether a newer version of webOS is available. If an update is found, you'll be prompted to download and install it.

Step 4: Enable Automatic Updates

While you're in this menu, it's worth toggling on Allow Automatic Updates if it isn't already enabled. This way, your TV will download and install future updates in the background, typically overnight, without requiring manual checks.

Step 5: Let the TV Restart

Once the update finishes downloading, your LG TV will restart on its own to complete the installation. This process can take several minutes, and you should avoid unplugging the TV or turning it off during this time, as interrupting an update can sometimes cause software issues.

Troubleshooting Update Problems

  • Update won't download: Restart your router and TV, then try again.
  • Update stuck at a percentage: Wait at least 20–30 minutes before assuming it has failed; some updates are large and take time.
  • "No updates available" but you suspect an issue: Try unplugging the TV for 60 seconds to reset its network connection, then check again.
  • Update keeps failing: Check LG's support site for a USB update file you can download to a flash drive and install manually as a backup method.

Keeping your LG TV current with the latest software not only improves stability but also often adds new features to the webOS interface, making it worth checking every few months even if you haven't noticed any problems.
