A crack across the rear camera lens, or photos that come out blurry, hazy, or streaked despite a steady hand, is a common but often misunderstood fault. Not every blurry photo means the lens is damaged, and not every cracked lens produces unusable images — understanding the specific cause determines the most effective fix.

Diagnosing the Problem

Is the blur consistent across all conditions, or only in certain lighting? Blur that appears only in low light is likely due to camera shake combined with slow shutter speed — not a lens defect. Blur across all lighting conditions, including bright daylight, points to a physical obstruction or lens damage.

Is the lens visibly cracked, scratched, or hazy? Look closely at the camera module. A crack, deep scratch, or internal condensation on the lens cover glass will create blur, flare, and ghosting in photos.

Is the lens cover dirty? The most common cause of soft or hazy photos is a smudged or oily lens cover. A single fingerprint on a camera lens is enough to reduce sharpness significantly. Wipe with a clean microfibre cloth before concluding the lens is damaged.

Fixes for a Dirty or Smudged Lens

Wipe the lens cover gently with a clean, dry microfibre cloth in a circular motion. For stubborn grease or condensation on the outer surface, breathe lightly on the lens to create moisture, then wipe — the same technique used for eyeglasses. Do not use abrasive cloths, paper towels, or household cleaning sprays.

Fixing a Cracked Lens Cover

The good news is that on most modern phones, the element that sits over the camera is a protective cover glass, not the optical lens itself. This cover glass can be replaced without replacing the camera module. Replacement cover glasses for Samsung Galaxy, iPhone, Tecno, and Infinix models are widely available and affordable. A technician can replace the cover glass in a short session, restoring full image quality immediately.

If the optical lens beneath the cover glass is damaged — which occurs in severe impacts — the entire camera module requires replacement, a more involved and costly repair.

Blurry Photos Without Visible Lens Damage

If the lens is clean and intact but photos remain blurry, the camera's optical image stabilisation (OIS) mechanism or autofocus actuator may have failed internally. Test by shooting in Pro or Manual mode with autofocus disabled and the phone braced on a stable surface. If the image is sharp under those conditions, the autofocus mechanism is the fault. If it remains blurry, the OIS or the sensor itself is damaged.

Clean the lens first, every time. If the cover glass is cracked, replace it — it is the most affordable camera repair available and restores image quality fully in most cases.
