Blotches of green, purple, yellow, or pink appearing on your phone's screen are a clear sign that something is wrong with the display. These discolourations can grow over time and, if ignored, eventually consume large portions of the screen.
Why It Happens
Colour distortion and spots typically indicate one of the following: pressure damage to the LCD or OLED panel (often from sitting on the phone or a bag pressing against it), liquid penetration reaching the display layer, a failing display connector, or natural OLED burn-in and degradation on older devices.
OLED screens — used in most mid-range to flagship phones sold today — are particularly susceptible to colour shifts when physically stressed, because the organic compounds in the panel react to both pressure and moisture.
What You Can Try at Home
Restart the phone. Occasionally, display driver errors cause temporary colour anomalies that disappear after a reboot.
Check for software causes. Some third-party screen filter or colour calibration apps can interfere with the display pipeline. Boot into safe mode and observe whether the spots disappear.
Inspect for physical damage. Press gently around the edges of the discoloured area. If the shape of the blotch changes with light pressure, the panel layer has been physically compromised.
The Hard Truth
In the majority of cases, green or purple blotches on a phone screen signal panel-level hardware damage. This cannot be resolved through software. The display assembly — or at minimum the screen panel — needs to be replaced. For OLED screens, which are more expensive than LCD panels, the repair cost can be significant, particularly for flagship devices.
If your phone is still under warranty and there is no visible physical damage, raise the issue with the manufacturer or authorised service centre before paying for an out-of-pocket repair.
Discolouration and colour spots are a sign your display is under stress or already failing. Act quickly — the damage tends to spread — and consult a technician to determine whether panel replacement is the most cost-effective path forward.
