A speaker that produces distorted, buzzing, rattling, or crackling audio is not just unpleasant — it signals that the speaker is under stress. Caught early, the underlying cause can often be resolved without component replacement.

What Causes Audio Distortion

Crackling and distortion typically arise from one of three sources: debris lodged in the speaker grille vibrating against the membrane, the speaker being driven beyond its physical limits at maximum volume, or a physically damaged speaker cone or voice coil. Moisture infiltration — even minor humidity exposure over time — can also corrode the speaker membrane and cause persistent buzzing.

Fixes You Can Try at Home

Lower the volume. Every phone speaker has a physical limit beyond which it distorts. This is normal behaviour, not a fault. If distortion only occurs at maximum or near-maximum volume, simply reducing output resolves it immediately. Use a Bluetooth speaker for situations where higher volume is needed.

Clean the speaker grille. The grille at the bottom of most phones — and the earpiece at the top — accumulates dust, lint, and debris that vibrates against the membrane and creates a buzzing or rattling sound. Use a soft, dry toothbrush to gently brush across the grille openings. A short burst of compressed air held at an angle (not directly into the grille) can dislodge deeper debris.

Test with different audio sources and apps. Crackling that only occurs in one app may be a software encoding issue, not a speaker problem. Test with the built-in music player, a YouTube video, and a phone call to determine whether the distortion is universal.

Check for a poorly seated back cover. On phones with removable or press-fit back panels, a slightly lifted cover can vibrate sympathetically with speaker output, creating a rattle that sounds like speaker distortion. Press firmly around the edges of the back cover while audio plays — if the rattle stops, the cover simply needs to be reseated or the adhesive renewed.

Hardware Causes

Distortion that occurs at normal volume, across all audio sources, and does not improve after cleaning points to a physically degraded speaker membrane. Replacement is the fix. Speaker components are generally affordable and most Nairobi repair shops carry them for popular models.

Clean the grille, check the volume level, and test multiple audio sources before concluding the speaker has failed. Debris alone causes a substantial number of distortion complaints.
