A call that cuts off mid-conversation — without either party hanging up — is a dropped call. Occasional drops in weak signal areas are a network reality. Frequent drops in areas where signal appears adequate point to a problem with the phone, the SIM, the network, or a specific combination of factors.

Network and Signal Causes

Check signal strength in the area where drops occur. If signal shows one or two bars, drops are expected — the radio link between the phone and the tower is marginal. Move to an area with stronger signal or use Wi-Fi calling if your carrier (Safaricom or Airtel) supports it on your plan.

Check whether the drops are VoLTE related. Voice over LTE (VoLTE) calls are carried over the 4G data network rather than a legacy voice channel. In areas with inconsistent 4G coverage, a VoLTE call may drop when the connection briefly switches between towers. Disabling VoLTE under Settings > SIM Card > VoLTE Calls may improve call stability in weak-signal environments, at the cost of call quality.

Phone-Side Fixes

Toggle Aeroplane Mode on and off before making important calls in areas where drops have previously occurred. This refreshes the tower connection and often connects the phone to a stronger, closer cell.

Remove and reseat the SIM card. A partially unseated SIM causes intermittent signal that manifests as dropped calls rather than consistently poor signal. Remove the SIM tray, reseat the card, and reinsert firmly.

Update the phone's software. Call handling software bugs — including drop-triggering issues with VoLTE handover — are frequently patched in routine OS updates. Ensure both the OS and carrier settings are up to date.

Test with a different SIM. Borrow a SIM from another person on the same network and test calls. If drops stop, your SIM card is degraded or the account has a network configuration issue — contact your carrier. If drops continue with a different SIM, the phone itself is the problem.

Hardware Causes

A phone with a damaged cellular antenna drops calls frequently regardless of signal strength. The antenna can be damaged by a drop, by water, or by a prior repair that did not reseat the antenna connector correctly. Professional inspection of the antenna connection is the appropriate next step after software causes are eliminated.

Test with another SIM and check VoLTE settings before concluding the phone needs hardware repair. Carrier and SIM faults account for a meaningful share of dropped call complaints.
