Moderate warmth during intensive tasks — gaming, video streaming, video calls — is normal smartphone behaviour. Excessive heat that makes the phone uncomfortable to hold, causes the screen to dim automatically, or triggers a temperature warning is a problem that needs attention.

Why Phones Overheat During Use

Heat during use comes from the processor and the battery working hard simultaneously. The causes of excessive heat — beyond what is expected for a given task — include using the phone while it is charging (especially with a fast charger), a poorly ventilated case trapping heat, a battery that has degraded and generates more heat per charge cycle, prolonged use of the camera at high resolution, or demanding games running on maximum graphics settings.

Practical Steps to Reduce Heat

Remove the phone case during heavy use. Phone cases — particularly rubber and leather cases — trap heat effectively. During gaming or long video sessions, removing the case allows the phone's metal or glass back to radiate heat into the air.

Do not charge while gaming or watching video. Charging generates heat in itself; combining it with a processor-intensive task creates more heat than the phone can dissipate. Charge separately and then use the phone.

Lower screen brightness and graphics settings. Most mobile games have graphics quality settings. Reducing resolution, frame rate, and effects significantly reduces processor load and heat generation.

Ensure the phone is not in direct sunlight. Ambient heat combined with internal heat generation can push the phone past its thermal limit quickly, especially in Nairobi's climate during the dry season.

Close unused apps running in the background. Each open app consumes some CPU and memory — reducing the background load gives the processor more headroom before it starts generating significant heat.

When Hardware Is the Cause

A phone that overheats within minutes of light use — browsing, calls, low-resolution video — has a hardware problem. Battery degradation is the most common hardware cause. A failing battery runs hotter and puts more thermal stress on surrounding components. Battery replacement typically resolves this.

Excessive heat during use is usually a management problem — too many tasks, wrong environment, wrong case, or charging simultaneously. Address those factors first before assuming a hardware fault.
