A phone that charges only when the cable is held at a specific angle, stops charging randomly, or loses the charging connection when the phone is moved slightly has a connection problem — either at the cable end or at the port itself.
Diagnosing the Issue
The first question is whether the fault is in the cable or in the phone's port.
Test with multiple cables. If different cables all require the same awkward angle to charge, the port is the problem. If only one cable has the issue, the cable is at fault.
Inspect the port with a torch. Look for bent pins, debris lodged inside, or visible corrosion. USB-C ports have a central tongue with pins on both sides — if this tongue is bent even slightly, it will cause intermittent contact.
Inspect the cable's connector. Look for bent pins, fraying near the connector, or a connector that has slightly widened from repeated insertions.
Fixes You Can Try at Home
Clean the port thoroughly. A small amount of compacted lint between the pins is enough to push the connector slightly out of alignment. Use a toothpick and a can of compressed air if available.
Replace the cable. A quality USB-C or Lightning cable resolves cable-end faults. Invest in a braided cable with a reinforced connector — these last significantly longer than standard cables.
When the Port Needs Replacement
A port with a bent central tongue, broken retaining clips, or cracked solder joints requires professional replacement. This is not a DIY repair for most users — the port is soldered directly to the motherboard on most modern phones. A technician with a soldering station can replace it, often the same day. The cost is typically reasonable and well worth it compared to buying a new phone.
Intermittent charging is almost always a port or cable problem. Start with the cable, move to port cleaning, and escalate to a port replacement only once the cheaper options are eliminated.
