If the person on the other end of a call cannot hear you, your voice sounds muffled or cuts out, or voice recording produces silence, the microphone is not functioning correctly. Before assuming a hardware failure, a systematic check through software causes is worthwhile.

Identify Which Microphone Is Affected

Modern smartphones typically have two or three microphones: one at the bottom near the charging port (for calls and recording), one near the rear camera (for video recording), and sometimes one at the top (for noise cancellation). Understanding which scenario triggers the problem narrows the diagnosis significantly.

  • No audio during calls: Bottom microphone.
  • Poor voice quality on video calls or recordings: Rear or top microphone.
  • No audio in video recordings: Rear microphone (the camera app uses a specific input).

Software and Permission Checks

Check microphone permissions. On Android, go to Settings > Privacy > Permission Manager > Microphone. On iPhone, go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone. Any app that needs microphone access — phone, WhatsApp, voice recorder, camera — must have permission explicitly granted. Revoked permissions are a surprisingly common cause of microphone failures that appear after an OS update resets permissions.

Test the microphone in multiple apps. Use the built-in voice recorder, WhatsApp voice notes, and a phone call in sequence. If the microphone works in one context but not another, the fault is app-specific or permission-specific, not hardware.

Restart the phone. Clears audio driver states that can cause a microphone to stop responding mid-session.

Physical Causes

Clean the microphone port. The bottom microphone is a small pinhole opening next to or near the charging port. Lint and compressed debris block it easily, dramatically reducing or eliminating audio pickup. Use a toothpick or a fine-bristled brush to gently clear the opening.

Check for a screen protector or case blocking the microphone. Some cases and poorly cut screen protectors partially cover the microphone opening. Remove the case and protector and test again.

Hardware Faults

A microphone that fails all software and permission checks, is clean, and is not obstructed by a case has likely failed physically. Microphone components are small and relatively affordable to replace. However, on many modern phones the microphone is soldered to the motherboard rather than being a plug-in component, making it a more involved repair. Get a technician's assessment before committing to a repair cost.

Check permissions first — it is the single most common and most overlooked cause of sudden microphone failure after an OS update.
