A phone that shows one bar of signal where it should show four, drops to no signal indoors, or struggles to maintain a data connection in areas where other phones on the same network perform normally has a cellular signal problem. The cause can be environmental, software-related, or hardware.

Environmental Factors First

Cellular signal is affected by distance from the nearest base station, physical obstructions (concrete walls, hills, underground spaces), network congestion in dense areas, and the frequency bands in use. Before treating the phone as the problem, check whether others on the same network (Safaricom, Airtel, or Telkom) experience the same signal level in the same location. If they do, the network coverage is the issue, not the phone.

Software Fixes

Toggle Aeroplane Mode on and off. This forces the phone to search for and connect to the strongest available cell tower. It is the fastest fix for a phone that has lost signal and not automatically reconnected.

Manually select the network. Go to Settings > SIM Card & Mobile Network > Network Operators > Search Manually. Select your carrier from the list. This forces a fresh registration with the network and can resolve a stuck connection to a weak or congested tower.

Switch between network modes. Go to Settings > SIM Card & Mobile Network > Preferred Network Type. Switching from automatic to 4G only, or from 4G to 3G, can connect you to a stronger signal if the phone is clinging to a weak 4G tower when a stronger 3G tower is available. Switch back to automatic once signal is restored.

Update the carrier settings (iPhone). On iPhone, carrier settings updates are delivered separately from iOS updates. Check Settings > General > About — if a carrier settings update is available, a prompt will appear automatically.

SIM-Related Causes

Remove the SIM card, inspect it for damage or debris, clean the gold contacts gently with a dry cloth, and reseat it. A SIM that is not fully seated or has corroded contacts shows poor or no signal regardless of actual network coverage.

Hardware Causes

A phone that shows no signal in areas with confirmed coverage, after toggling aeroplane mode, reseating the SIM, and selecting the network manually, may have a damaged cellular antenna. Antennas are typically routed through the phone's frame — a crack in the chassis or a loose antenna connector inside the device can significantly degrade reception. Professional diagnosis is required.

Toggle aeroplane mode and manually reselect the network. These two steps resolve the majority of sudden signal loss events without any hardware involvement.
