Lines running across a phone screen — whether horizontal, vertical, or a grid of both — are one of the clearer indicators of hardware trouble. They tend to appear suddenly and often worsen over time, so addressing them early is important.

What Causes Screen Lines

Lines on a phone display are almost always caused by a damaged display panel or a loose, partially disconnected ribbon cable between the screen and the motherboard. A drop or impact is the most common trigger, but lines can also appear due to water damage, manufacturing defects, or natural panel degradation on older devices. Software very rarely causes persistent lines — if lines appear only in specific apps, that points to a software render issue, but fixed lines visible on every screen including the lock screen are hardware.

Quick Checks Before Visiting a Technician

Restart the phone. On the slim chance the lines are caused by a display driver crash rather than physical damage, a restart may clear them.

Gently flex the phone's frame. Hold the phone at each end and apply very slight, gentle torsion. If the lines shift, disappear, or change pattern, the ribbon cable is loose or partially unseated rather than the panel itself being destroyed. This is a cheaper fix than a full screen replacement.

Connect the phone to an external display via USB-C or HDMI (if supported). If the external display shows a clean image, the fault is definitively in the phone's screen assembly rather than the GPU or motherboard.

The Repair Path

Lines caused by a damaged panel require a full screen assembly replacement. Lines caused by a loose cable may only require the cable to be reseated — a much lower-cost repair. A technician can determine which is the case within minutes of opening the device.

 

Screen lines are a hardware problem in almost every case. The earlier you address them, the better — panels that develop lines from cable stress can deteriorate rapidly into larger display failures if the connection is left under tension.
