Your phone cuts off mid-call, mid-task, or even from a seemingly healthy battery percentage — and restarts on its own or requires a manual power-on. Unexpected shutdowns are disruptive and, depending on the cause, can indicate a serious underlying problem.

Common Causes

Unexpected shutdowns can be caused by a battery that can no longer hold voltage under load — shutting off even at 30 or 40 percent displayed charge — an overheating processor triggering a thermal shutdown, a software crash in a core system process, or physical damage to the battery or motherboard from a prior drop or water exposure.

The Battery Is the Most Likely Culprit

A phone that shuts off at anything other than 0 percent battery, and restarts to find charge still remaining, almost certainly has a degraded battery. As battery cells age, their internal resistance increases. Under load — a call, a game, the camera — voltage drops sharply below what the processor needs to operate, and the phone shuts off as a protective measure. The battery percentage shown is an estimate, not a live measurement, and aged batteries make inaccurate estimates.

Check battery health. If it is below 80 percent, replacement will likely eliminate the shutdowns.

Software and Overheating Causes

Check for thermal shutdowns. If the phone is also running hot before it shuts off, it is shutting down to protect the processor. Follow the overheating fixes outlined in the excessive heat article.

Update the operating system. Some unexpected shutdown issues are tied to known software bugs that manufacturers fix in patches.

Boot into safe mode. If the phone runs without shutting off in safe mode, a third-party app is causing the crash.

Hardware Faults

If shutdowns occur in safe mode with a healthy battery and no overheating, a motherboard fault is possible. This requires professional diagnosis.

Start with the battery — it causes the majority of unexpected shutdowns. Check health, replace if needed, and only investigate software or motherboard causes once the battery is ruled out.
