Your phone is plugged in but barely gaining charge — or charging so slowly it barely keeps up with use. Slow charging is frustrating but usually has a straightforward explanation.
Understand What "Normal" Speed Looks Like
Charging speed depends on the charger's wattage, the cable's capability, the phone's maximum charging spec, and the battery's current charge level. Most modern mid-range phones support 18W to 33W fast charging; flagship models may go up to 65W or higher. A standard 5W charger — the type that comes with many budget phones — will charge any phone slowly by design. This is not a fault; it is simply an underpowered charger.
Common Causes of Unexpectedly Slow Charging
Wrong charger. Plug a 5W charger into a phone rated for 33W fast charging and it will charge five to six times more slowly than it should. Always use the original charger or a certified fast charger that matches your phone's protocol (USB Power Delivery, Qualcomm Quick Charge, or the manufacturer's proprietary standard).
Wrong cable. Many cables are charge-only and cannot carry the data signalling required to negotiate fast-charge protocols. Use a cable rated for the required wattage.
Dirty or damaged port. Even a partially obstructed port can prevent the negotiation handshake between phone and charger that enables fast charging.
Background activity. A phone that is actively running demanding apps while charging will charge slowly. Enable aeroplane mode or turn the screen off while charging to redirect power to the battery.
Battery age. Older batteries charge more slowly as their internal resistance increases. If your phone is two or more years old and has always charged slowly recently, battery replacement may restore faster charging.
Check the charger and cable first — they are responsible for the majority of slow charging complaints. Original or certified accessories make a noticeable and immediate difference.
