Ghost touches — the phone tapping, swiping, and typing on its own without anyone touching the screen — are both baffling and disruptive. Calls get made to random contacts, apps open and close unprompted, and text messages send themselves mid-composition.

Why Ghost Touches Happen

The digitiser layer of a touchscreen is sensitive to electrical interference. Ghost touches are commonly caused by a faulty or counterfeit charger creating electrical noise through the charging cable, a damaged or poorly fitted screen protector, a cracked digitiser registering phantom input at the crack points, moisture or sweat trapped between the screen and a protector, or — less commonly — a failing digitiser component.

Fixes to Try Immediately

Unplug the charger. This is the single most effective first test. A vast number of ghost touch reports disappear the moment the user removes a cheap third-party charger. If the ghost touches stop when unplugged, replace the charger with an original or a certified third-party unit. Cheap chargers sold at Nairobi street stalls often lack proper grounding, making this an extremely common issue locally.

Remove the screen protector. Lift the protector cleanly, clean the screen with a dry cloth, and use the phone without any protector for a few minutes. Bubbles, lifted edges, and cracked protectors are frequent ghost touch triggers.

Restart the phone and test in safe mode. Safe mode rules out a rogue app sending automated input.

Deeper Software Causes

Some Android skins have a palm rejection sensitivity setting under Display or Touch Sensitivity settings. Adjusting this can reduce false inputs if you have large hands or tend to rest your palm on the screen while typing.

Hardware Causes

If ghost touches persist after removing the charger, removing the protector, and testing in safe mode, the digitiser itself is degraded or damaged. A screen assembly replacement is the fix. This is also the outcome when ghost touches follow a drop that cracked the screen — the cracks create permanent false contact points.

Start with the charger. It solves the problem more often than any other fix, costs nothing, and takes five seconds to test.
