A phone that has been submerged, caught in heavy rain, dropped in a sink, or simply exposed to excessive humidity can suffer water damage ranging from temporary glitches to permanent component failure. How you respond in the first few minutes significantly affects the outcome.
Immediate Actions — What to Do Right Now
Power off the phone immediately. Do not attempt to test whether it still works. Water and electricity together cause short circuits that damage components which would otherwise survive the exposure. Turn it off at once.
Remove the SIM card and SD card. Both are susceptible to water damage and should be dried separately.
Do not use heat to dry the phone. Hair dryers, microwaves, and placing the phone in direct sunlight in Nairobi's midday heat are harmful. Excessive heat causes the battery to swell and can warp internal components. The moisture needs to evaporate slowly and evenly.
Do not charge the phone while it is wet. Charging while moisture is present inside causes short circuits on the charging board. Wait until the phone is fully dry.
Drying the Phone
The most effective home drying method is airflow — not heat. Place the phone upright (or propped at an angle) in a location with good air circulation for 48 to 72 hours. If the phone has a removable back cover, remove it. A small desktop fan blowing gently across the phone accelerates evaporation.
Contrary to popular belief, rice is not an effective desiccant. Silica gel packets — the small pouches found in new shoe boxes, electronics packaging, and vitamin bottles — are far more effective. Place several packets in a sealed container with the phone for 48 hours.
After Drying
Power on only after at least 48 hours of drying time. If the phone functions normally, monitor it over the following week — residual moisture can cause intermittent faults that appear days after the initial exposure.
Professional Assessment
Even if the phone appears to work after drying, internal corrosion can develop over days and weeks where moisture has touched the motherboard. A technician can clean the board with isopropyl alcohol and inspect for early corrosion. This preventive step is particularly worthwhile for phones exposed to pool water, seawater, or other contaminated water rather than clean tap water, as dissolved minerals and salts accelerate corrosion.
Power off immediately. Do not charge. Allow 48 to 72 hours of airflow drying before attempting to power on. These three steps give the phone the best possible chance of full recovery.
