Wi-Fi problems on a phone take several forms: the phone refuses to connect to a network, connects but then immediately drops, shows full signal but delivers no internet, or works on some networks but not others. Each symptom points to a different cause.

Start With the Router, Not the Phone

Before treating the phone as the problem, check whether other devices can connect to the same Wi-Fi network. If your laptop, tablet, or another phone also has trouble, the router is at fault — not your phone. Restart the router by unplugging it for thirty seconds and reconnecting. This resolves a substantial number of Wi-Fi complaints instantly.

Phone-Side Software Fixes

Forget the network and reconnect. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi, long-press the network name, and select Forget. Reconnect by entering the password fresh. This clears a corrupt IP or DNS configuration that prevents a working connection.

Toggle Aeroplane Mode on and off. This resets all radio hardware simultaneously and often restores Wi-Fi connectivity that has dropped without explanation.

Restart the phone. Clears network stack states that can become corrupted after hours or days of continuous use.

Check the IP configuration. If the phone connects but shows no internet, go to the Wi-Fi network settings and switch from DHCP to Static, assigning an IP manually (e.g., 192.168.1.100, gateway 192.168.1.1, DNS 8.8.8.8). If this restores internet access, the router's DHCP server has a fault.

Reset Network Settings. Under Settings > General Management > Reset > Reset Network Settings (Android varies by manufacturer; iPhone has this directly under Settings > General > Transfer or Reset). This resets all saved Wi-Fi passwords, mobile data settings, and Bluetooth pairings to default. A nuclear option but highly effective for persistent connectivity faults.

Hardware Causes

A phone that cannot connect to any Wi-Fi network across multiple locations and multiple routers — while other devices connect normally to those same networks — has a hardware Wi-Fi fault. The Wi-Fi antenna or Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip may be damaged, often from a drop that dislodged the antenna connector inside the phone. Professional disassembly and antenna inspection or chip replacement is required.

Restart the router first. Then forget and reconnect the network. These two steps resolve Wi-Fi problems in the majority of cases without any technical intervention.
