The Charging Chain

Charging a phone involves a chain of components: the charger and cable, the charging port, the charging IC on the motherboard, and the battery. A fault anywhere in this chain stops charging. Our diagnosis works through each link systematically.

Step 1: Charger and Cable Test

We test with a known-good charger and cable first. Faulty cables — especially third-party cables — are responsible for a surprising number of "phone won't charge" cases. Cables develop internal wire breaks from repeated bending that are invisible externally.

Step 2: Charging Port Inspection

We inspect the charging port under magnification. Lint, dust, and debris compacted inside the port is an extremely common cause of charging failure — the cable cannot make proper electrical contact. We carefully clean the port using appropriate tools. In many cases, cleaning alone restores charging without any parts replacement.

We also check for bent or broken pins inside the port, corrosion, and physical damage. A damaged port requires replacement.

Step 3: Charging Port Replacement

If the port is physically damaged or corroded beyond cleaning, we desolder the old port and fit a new one. This is a micro-soldering repair that requires skill and precision, and is a service we perform routinely at Pro-Logic Technologies.

Step 4: Charging IC and Battery Test

If the port is clean and undamaged but charging still fails, we test the battery and the charging IC on the motherboard. A failed charging IC is a board-level repair requiring component replacement via micro-soldering.
