During calls, your Samsung screen doesn't turn off when held to your ear — so you accidentally mute, end calls, or trigger buttons with your cheek. Or the opposite: the screen turns off and won't come back on during a call. Both are proximity sensor faults. Call 0723763173 and we'll diagnose it at our Nairobi workshop.
What Does the Proximity Sensor Do?
The proximity sensor on a Samsung phone detects when the phone is held close to your face during a call and turns the screen off — preventing accidental touch input. When you move the phone away, the screen turns back on. A faulty sensor either fails to detect closeness (screen stays on during calls) or over-triggers (screen stays off even when held away from the face).
Why Is the Proximity Sensor Malfunctioning?
- Screen protector or case blocking the sensor — the sensor is located near the top earpiece; a thick or misaligned screen protector can block it permanently
- Dirt or debris on the sensor window — the sensor reads through a small window on the front of the phone; cleaning it may resolve the issue
- Software miscalibration — the sensor threshold needs recalibration after a screen replacement or software update
- Physical damage to the sensor — a drop or screen replacement with incorrect parts can damage or misalign the proximity sensor
- Failed sensor component — the sensor hardware itself has failed and needs replacement
Recalibration and Repair
For software causes, we recalibrate the sensor. For hardware faults — particularly common after third-party screen replacements — we replace the sensor or the screen assembly with a compatible unit.
