Why Lines Appear on Phone Screens

Display panels are made up of rows and columns of pixel data controlled by driver circuitry. When communication breaks down along any row or column, it manifests as a line across the screen:

• Damaged display ribbon cable — the cable carrying display data from the motherboard to the screen can develop micro-tears from repeated flexing, causing line artifacts.
• Loose cable connection — a partially disconnected display cable can cause intermittent or permanent line patterns.
• Impact damage to the panel — a hard drop can fracture the thin-film transistor (TFT) layer inside the panel, creating permanent lines.
• Display driver IC fault — the chip on the motherboard responsible for driving the display can fail, producing line patterns.
• Faulty replacement screen — poorly manufactured aftermarket panels often exhibit line defects within weeks of fitting.

Step 1: Cable Reseating Test

We begin by opening the device and reseating the display cable. If lines appeared gradually or are intermittent, a loose cable is the most likely cause and reseating it is often a permanent fix achieved without any parts cost. We test the screen thoroughly after reseating before closing the phone.

Step 2: Screen Assembly Replacement

When the panel itself is damaged — confirmed by lines that persist even with the cable firmly connected and tested with a known-good cable — we replace the full display assembly. Lines caused by internal panel fractures cannot be repaired; replacement is the only path to a clean display.

Step 3: Motherboard Driver Repair

Where the display driver IC on the motherboard is the cause, our technicians perform component-level diagnosis and micro-soldering repair. This is less common but important to identify before simply replacing screen after screen to no effect.
